WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN SOLID WOOD FURNITURE?

The main reason why the term “solid wood furniture” gets thrown around these days is not to differentiate it from other softwood variants, but to distinguish the furniture from engineered wood and processed wood furniture.

Unfortunately, the market is flooded with polywood/engineered wood furniture disguised as solid wood furniture but segregating them from each other is quite simple and straightforward.

Keep a lookout for the grain and texture of the wood, if the patterns repeat themselves in a seemingly non-sequential succession, you’re most likely looking at the real deal. If however, the patterns seem to be repeating without a heavy texture, the furniture is most likely plywood or any of its variants, like MDF or plywood.

COST

Without a doubt, solid wood furniture costs a lot more than engineered wood. Solid wood is turned into furniture only from trees that have grown till full maturity to retain resilient properties. Some of these trees, like teakwood, for instance, takes about 20 years to fully mature and the wood themselves are quite expensive.

ECO-FRIENDLINESS

While it may seem paradoxical, solid wood furniture is generally a more eco-friendly alternative when compared to engineered wood furniture. Solid wood furniture harvested in most countries, even in ours, come from managed forests where the felling of trees is constantly monitored.

Moreover, most solid woods come from trees that are available in abundance and protected under policies wherein substitution policies are in place. Even the amount of processing that solid wood has to go through is much lower than engineered wood, meaning fewer toxins like formaldehyde, adhesives, etc.
