RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN, IDEAS, THEMES & CONCEPTS

Are you planning to build out a new restaurant or completely refurbish the interiors and design of your current one? It's not a exactly an easy task but its not a particularly difficult task either.

Provided the other factors are adequately satisfactory - cuisine, service, location and prices then the interiors, vibe, aura is a decisive factor to instill a sense of loyalty and patronage for any customer which is an invaluable business asset and more coveted than any marketing initiative you can undertake

Before we begin, we must understand that any given interior design is not seen in isolation, several design cues do often overlap and even indirect aspects like the service, location, staff attire and the cuisine itself can have an positive or negative impact on the restaurant's interiors

FACTORS THAT CAN BRING ABOUT THE DESIRED DESIGN STYLE

Broadly Speaking, there are 3 odd critical factors & then a slew of other miniscule aspects that have played a role in influencing the interiors and ultimately the success of the restaurant's we've worked with; they boil down to

  • FF&E - FURNITURE, FIXTURES & EQUIPMENTS
  • LIGHTING
  • COLOR SCHEME, PAINTS & ARCHITECTURE

FURNITURE, FITTINGS & EQUIPMENTS

While it is easy to underestimate the role that furniture plays in setting the interiors, out of personal experience, we've witnessed them single handedly revamp the looks with only minor expenditures in other aspects like placing handicrafts, tweaking the lighting arrangement and layouts

And we're not saying this simply because we sell the furniture ourselves. Its simply out first hand experience and due to the fact that we've worked extensively with interior designers and architects across India [See Prices Of Restaurant Furniture Here]

Also, unless you've spent a whole lot of money on flamboyant civil works, this is also likely to be the largest expense you'll make towards improving your interiors so every effort to ensure that you're getting the best possible value should be exercised

Having spent years trying to perfect our business model for customers like you, we'd like to think that we've taken care of this part for you, but we'd love for you to take this call yourself. Although the types of furniture used in a restaurant are quite a lot, most of them revolve around 4 key furniture units that influence the design of the restaurant, which we've listed below

  • Bar Counter Designs
  • Restaurant Table Designs
  • Restaurant Sofa Designs
  • Restaurant Chair Designs

  • RESTAURANT LIGHTING FIXTURES & CONCEPTS

This can refer to both natural as well as artificial lighting arrangements at your restaurant

LED lighting is the most commonly used decorative lighting in India, the same can be used for restaurants as well. However, this has to be done in a manner that is consistent with the restaurant's interior decor, ambiance, and style

Premium restaurants typically use pendants & chandeliers as lighting arrangements, smaller restaurants with a much lower budget typically use accent lighting arrangements with a translucent covering and LED lighting to radiate a much more restrained aura

A minimlistic trend has swayed most business owners and consumers towards a much more minimalistic lighting trend wherein sleek chandeliers and orbs that a duck the line of vision are becoming increasingly common

    PAINT SCHEMES & ARCHITECTURE

Although "paint schemes" and "architecture" are two different items, they're inextricably linked and have a tremendous impact on the interiors of a restaurant.

Architecture is an all-encompassing word that refers to the layout, wall carvings and relative dimensions. These don't have much direct bearings on how a restaurant is actually positioned

The paint schemes, on the other hand, do. Vibrant Indian restaurants feature gaudy, contrasting colors that are committed to purple, violet, red, green & pink hues. Simpler restaurants, bottomless buffets, open-air cafeterias and brunch joints typically feature lighter colors. On the other hand, fine-dining restaurants, English taverns, Italian restaurants and specialty evening dining joints feature much darker paint schemes and ambient lighting for a more contemporary & tight knit architectutre

DIFFERENT RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN STYLES & THEIR FEATURES

The interior design styles, restaurant themes, decorative elements etc are largely the same for global restauranteurs as well as local Indian restauranteurs

However, the intermingling of cultures and an innate, "quintessentially Indian" preference for several aspects means that Indian restauranteurs wish for something truly unique that they know their audience will enjoy due to the familiarity and comfort & be awe-inspired by the novelty at the same time.

    MODERN RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

The uber-rich, upper-middle class and middle class folk in India dine-out on the regular. Far far more than the middle and lower-middle class folks,

While there are takers among them that prefer a modern interior design, that is both futuristic, minimalistic & luxurious at the same time

A great many of them also love the appeal, the comfort & familiarity that mildly peppered Indian interior design radiates

Both Barbecue Nation and Mainland China are prime examples of restaurants that have successfully pulled off such an appeal

Artistically carved murals, classical Indian paintings, furniture that is made from traditional solid wood or cane weave but upholstered in premium leather or fabric, contrasting colors in pretty much most interior elements and lighting with purple or yellow-ish hues are only some of the few tricks to achieve a modern vibe

Modern restaurant interiors also blends well with Mughal-era architecture and is particularly special among Indian restaurants abroad

    CONTEMPORARY STYLE RESTAURANT

Furniture for modern styled restaurants today are extravagant with heavy upholstery on premium materials like velvet, full-grain leather & performance foam for padding. Electroplating mild steel in a gold finish or a platinum finish is the easiest way to achieve contemporary style.

The very idea of modern furniture was inspired by the mid-century design movement where the sparse use of materials was considered trendy under the guise of using fewer materials to survive the depression during that era.

Anyway, here are a few types of furniture pieces that are likely to be present in a modern-themed restaurant.

The minimalism of colors and lines of modern interior design style has led to its popularity in the current day and age.

Modern-style restaurant bar counters marry the modernity of sleek silhouettes with the elegance of materials such as natural or engineered wood or ceramic tiles in a way that provides form as well as function in the same unit.

The elegant form of modern furniture also tends to go well a variety of backgrounds. It can sit at harmony with contemporary interior décor as well as it can counterbalance the masculine aesthetic of the industrial style.

    CONTEMPORARY RESTAURANT LIGHTING

Modern themed restaurants clad with furniture styled like the ones mentioned above make heavy use of both ambient lighting and accent lighting. Upscale and luxury modern restaurants can afford expensive hanging chandeliers.

But modern styled restaurants on a budget can make use of simple ambient lighting after dawn and rely on heavy natural lighting before dawn. See the examples listed below to get a better idea.

PAINT SCHEMES AND ARCHITECTURE FOR MODERN RESTAURANT INTERIORS

As a standard thumb rule, the wall color schemes for modern restaurants should be in a lighter shade, the dim atmosphere and deeper hues surrounding the restaurant should originate from the darker colored furniture & fixtures, and reflection from the glossy floor (which can be both light or dark) in shade.

This set-up is ideal to keep modern-styled restaurants run successfully throughout the day, darker paint schemes on the wall is likely to give a shady or dingy interior during the daytime when most diners would want to be exposed to natural lighting.

Make way for the crevices, gaps, and strips on the walls at the time of civil architecture work to ensure that adequate provisions are made for recessed lighting arrangements.

    FINE DINING RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

Often interchangeably used with modern restaurants as the differences between them are quite subtle.

Think of fine dining restaurants that are much more family-friendly and not a joint where you’d want to take business meetings. Fine dining restaurants are where you’d want to spend special occasions with a tight-knit group of family or friends.

This appeals mostly to families and has a vintage annotation to it as the trend of fine dining restaurants is being replaced by themed restaurants and uber-chic restaurants to quench the tastes of boomers and millennials.

However, even among these groups, there are a few occasions where fine dining is preferred, this explains why some of the oldest fine dining restaurants enjoy a cult following even today

    LIGHTING FOR FINE DINING RESTAURANTS

Unlike modern restaurant diners that rely on dim or bright lighting but lighter colors on the flooring and walls, fine dining restaurants rely on lighter shades for all design aspects.

This means the furniture fabric tends to be lighter in shade but keeping sturdiness in mind, some dark wood types get a pass as they radiate an impression of strength and durability, all of which are desirable design aspects for a fine dining joint

PAINT SCHEMES & ARCHITECTURE FOR FINE DINING RESTAURANTS

Think extremely light colors like off-white, cream, beige, light grey maybe even sky blue.

A gently worked false ceiling, wooden or completely carpeted flooring and multicolor/distressed patterns on furniture, walls or any other decoration items can also do wonders to achieve a fine-dining style architecture or design.

If you’re stuck at a decision-making crossroad while setting up you’re fine dining restaurant, simply think of what a banquet-style hall or reception area would opt for and go ahead with that decision.

    THALI SERVING RESTAURANT INTERIORS

Also referred to as Gujarati, Rajasthani, or western Indian-style restaurant interiors. Patrons of these restaurants tend to be strict teetotalers and vegetarians. These restaurants themselves serve a specific type of buffet that is native to the western region

The western region of India is known for its opulence, so copper hints either by way of furniture, cutlery, traditional Indian crockery & carved wooden furniture + artisanal wall columns with medieval Mughal architecture and colored frosted glass will all work like a charm for achieving this interior decor style

Even for mid-size & mid-cost thali serving restaurants, using steel or plastic tables is a bad idea and granite, Italian marble or quartz based tables should be used instead

In terms of quick decor tips, using patterned strings/ropes as a barriers or dividers to different sections within the restaurant + a palace shaped doorway are all easy ways to add a western-Indian appeal

    FURNITURE FOR THALI SERVING RESTAURANTS

As is the case with any other restaurant style, Thali serving restaurants also cater to different economic sections of the market. So a plethora of different furniture styles are used, depending on the restaurant type

At the lower end, you have simple wooden rustic dining chairs and tables and at the higher end, you have premium upholstered furniture on a solid wood frame with a colorful bar counter

Given that you're reading this article and actively looking for an interior style for your thali, you're very likely looking for furniture for a high-range or at least a mid-range restaurant interiors, which have to look extravagant, since the Mughals were known for their extravagance and the Mughals had occupied the western belt of the country since a long time

We at FurnitureRoots, specialize in making our furniture look extravagant and vibrant without you having to spend a single extra dime that what is absolutely required

Rustic interior design style embraces free-flowing textures and earthy colors that emphasize rugged, natural beauty and create an unpretentious warmth.

Rustic restaurant bar counters use wooden beams and butcher block designs that bring out the beauty of the grain as well as other natural materials such as stone and concrete in earthy, subdued hues.

Such rustic commercial bar counters provide a bucolic, farmhouse-style ambiance.

    RUSTIC STYLED RESTAURANT LIGHTING

Simply due to the variations involved within rustic interior designs – Modern rustic, vintage rustic, industrial rustic, distressed rustic etc, there are no fixed lighting patterns that are followed across different rustic designs

However, a general principle to keep in mind – if the wood used across the interiors of the restaurant is predominantly in darkish hues, then using light white light is a good idea to balance out and vice versa,

Here are a few images of restaurants that have nailed this style.

    Rustic Industrial Restaurant Lighting

    RUSTIC COLOR SCHEMES AND ARCHITECTURE

A popular misconception is that rustic styles are almost unanimously brown in their tinge. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Warm neutral colors in both light and darker hues that are found plenty in nature are the best color schemes to go for, this can include forest green, ocean blue and earthy colors

Mild distressing also goes well with a few rustic themes, more on that later.

    UDIPI STYLE RESTAURANT INTERIORS

Classic South Indian Udipi restaurants are known for their lip-smacking vegetarian food, quick service and brutally simplistic furniture pieces a well

Although the images represent a more decorative variation of Udipi furniture set-up, the differences between the costs for these spin-offs and classic udipi style furniture is more or less the same

The lighting and interiors can be jazzed up a bit to attract a more loyal youth following

    FURNITURE FOR UDIPI RESTAURANTS

Simplistic dining tables and chairs with wooden seating, metal frames, marble tabletops, a simple dining buffet and a reception counter built for quick speed is all the furniture that is required at an Udipi restaurant

A typical cost for setting up furniture for a 60 seater Udipi restaurant will sum up to about ₹ 4,50,000

Distressed decor style, commonly referred to as shabby chic style, is one that combines weathered wood with peeling colors, often pastel, and takes a laissez faire view of nicks, bruises, cracks and peels.

Distressed bar or cafe counters are made using unfinished wood and combining it with distress painted metal or steel.

Distressed counters tend to blend in with both rustic decors, lending it more authenticity as well as with modern/contemporary decor styles where it imparts an element of serenity and colors.

ARCHITECTURE & LIGHTING FOR DISTRESSED RESTAURANTS

The very idea of distressing is to get a “matured” and aged look to the interior and architecture. This means it’s time to bring Etched or Frosted glass back into interior design for colored and vintage style “cathedral lighting” of the olden times.

Adding more texture to the interiors is always a good idea. Smoothness in design is contrary to what a “distress” style aims to achieve. Work our brickwork, textured and creaking flooring and patchwork are all great distressing ideas.

Restaurants that later on shifted to distressed styles, even when their erstwhile styling was poles apart have seen tremendous success, both from a design & commercial standpoint.

ECO-FRIENDLY CAFES & RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

Perfect for restaurants and cafes that are feature an outdoor area. With the growing consciousness of ecological damage, restaurants, and cafes that are committed to preserving the planet with a ?0 waste? mission are popping up all over the world, most of which are present in the west.

These restaurants don?t use plastic, avoid serving meat, some of them serve artificial meat and feature all types of ecological awareness décor and painting. Even the furniture is made from reclaimed/recycled wood & several décors or art pieces are upcycled with used items or parts.

These restaurants and cafes also feature tons of plants and many of them also opt for tons of lighting.

    FURNITURE FOR ECO-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS

While we understand that eco-friendly is not really an design style per-se but the furniture that can be housed and advertised to your diners can be beneficial towards the positioning of your cafe.

Marketing messages and an interior design consistent with the mission you’re trying to resonate with your target audience can be best done along with a special collection of furniture.

For instance, using “reclaimed or recycled wood furniture” – a furniture style that is not only studier but eco-friendly since it is made from old lumber that is broken down and glued together and reinforced for more sturdiness is a great way of publicizing the part you’re playing in this.

Alternatively using upcycled furniture, grand pieces that are made from discarded old materials like used car parts, old parts salvaged from shipwrecks, junkyards etc is also a great idea. We list some of the furniture pieces we make in each of these materials below.

SMALL RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN ON A BUDGET

Large, flashy, and themed restaurants with high-quality cuisine, architecture, design & service is not for everyone.

Regular customer folk who simply with to grab a well-cooked meal on a budget and at the same time spend quality time with their loved ones in a relatively restrained environment is a large market and if expenses are controlled and hygiene factors are met, such restaurants can be quite appealing and commercially profitable as well.

Simple furniture, with simple architecture, hearty meals and good service is a recipe for success for such restaurants.

    BUDGET FURNITURE FOR SMALL RESTAURANTS

If you’re not too fastidious and particular about every single aspect, budget furniture for commercial restaurants is a great choice

Of course, you won’t get the premium look of solid wood or brushed metal but their alternatives are a great choice for a restauranteur who knows that their customers aren’t going to be that finicky and also for a restauranteur who wishes to test the waters before making such a large investment into furniture & design

Materials like engineered wood (plywood & MDF) are cheaper quality wood with the slightly less appealing finish and durability

Cane weave or rattan weave are cheaper substitutes for expensive stainless steel furniture for outdoor restaurants and cafes

LIGHTING, ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN FOR BUDGET & SMALL RESTAURANTS

The easiest way to add decoration items to a restaurant that you’re building out on a budget is by natural elements that are free (or that carry a negligible cost) and that is also compact and airy

Plants, items from thrift stores, natural lighting instead of ambient lighting. Using zero-watt bulbs and tube lights instead of fancy lighting. Using mason jars instead of expensive glasses, exposed ducts that have only been touched up instead of expensive ceiling makeover are all great ideas for budget-friendly restaurant interiors

A smart idea for minimal cost overruns is to annex the outdoor areas, as they cost little to nothing to renovate and customers don’t care much about the ambiance in the outdoors.

    DHABA STYLE RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

Dhabas are generally small-sized quick service restaurants that are located off highways, intersections and junctions across India. Known for authentic, home cooked meals that are served hot and fresh, these originally popped up due to the demand stemming from truck drivers and are can be found in every state in India.

An authentic Dhaba is minimalistic, extremely low-budget and is known for its comfort Indian food.

However, across Urban pockets in the country, dhabas are popping up with a modern twist and western aesthetics to cater to the cravings of the uber-Indian who demand high quality, hygenic comfort food and tastefully done interiors as well

More often than not, upscale restaurants simply pick-up "Dhabas" as a theme and add decorations, furniture and design elements are peppered throughout the Dhaba to achieve the interior style

At FurnitureRoots, we've worked with a number of such restaurants with a fair amount of success, our automotive furniture seems to be the best collection to opt for when it comes to Dhaba style interiors as they remind even the diners of such upscale joints of the "Dhabas" humble origins

    ENGLISH PUB INTERIOR DESIGN

The Americans like to call it patio style dining, the Aussies like to call it streetside dining, the Europeans like to call it "cafes" but we Indians simply like any outdoor seating arrangement to be called an "Open Restaurant"

Rooftops, garden cafes, street side diners, large outdoor complexes and canteens are all ideal candidates for an outdoor dining arrangement and all of them need to feature outdoor grade restaurant furniture

The good news is that generally, restauranteurs tend to prefer simple designs for outdoors which means the prices tend to be lower as well

Having worked on & conceptualized a number of open-air restaurants and bars, we're in a good position to share some of these images with you for your design inspiration

AMERICAN STYLE INTERIOR DESIGN (DINERS & BARS)

We?ve all seen these in most classic American movies, American diners & bars feature an unusual amount of red & retro colors, some bits, and pieces of leather, a large café counter & restaurant dining booths which is a concept popularized in America.

Restaurants that serve tex-mex, Mexican food, American comfort food, steakhouses, and American brunch diners should definitely give this design style a strong consideration.

    ITALIAN STYLE RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

If the first thing that comes to your mind when we talk about Italian cuisine is pasta, pizzas, and calzones; you’re not too familiar with the rich culinary heritage of the eastern European nation that treasures both “the famiglia” and “fine-dining” as a centerpiece of its tradition.

The idea of a fine-dining restaurant that is now present globally was influenced by Italian & ancient Roman practices, there are some key differences between the two though.

Good quality wine is something that Italians take very seriously and every authentic restaurant has a featured wine cellar or a wine rack with assorted flavors from regional Europe.

Authentic Italian design also includes several paintings, murals, and wall arts and we’re not talking multi-cultural African, Eastern, or Indian designs, the paintings that will grace your Italian restaurant should be either triumphal paintings as was common during the Roman era or Catholicized church paintings that are extremely common in Italy

Dim task lighting is what is the most common among Italian restaurants, think of all the restaurant scenes you’ve seen in Sopranos, Godfather & Goodfellas and you’ll thank me later.

Furniture at Italian restaurants today is mainly inspired by 2 popular period designs, the mid-century style, and the Provincial Europe style. The former is much more subtle and weaves sleek modern design into the restaurant’s character while the latter is much more extravagant and more authentic.

    INDIAN RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

A small, cozy & comforting Indian restaurant with intricate but traditional cuisine is something that requires interiors that does justice to the food and the service

Although the idea of dining out is not too big in Indian culture, the idea of culinary expertise and hospitality is deep-rooted in Indian culture in what is called “Atithi Devo Bhava” which loosely translates to “Guest is God

This is reflected in the service, care, and attention that most diners experience when they visit an Indian restaurant. Indians are also known for their use of vibrant colors, bright lighting, complex pattern based paintings and handicrafts – even furniture used will mostly be made by hand with traditional rustic hues

If you’re building a small Indian restaurant, there are a few cues that seamlessly blend with several such restaurants.

Exposed brickwork or “kaccha” houses are found across India, to mimic these humble roots, leaving a section of the restaurant semi-finished with brickwork is a great idea. In a similar manner, manifesting humble Indian roots is a relatively easy task given the contrast of Indian culture with most others.

Showcasing tricycles, mopeds, remote village cultures and popular destinations like the Himalayas, the national parks, beaches of Goa and backwaters of Kerala in the backdrop of Carnatic & Mughal-era music is also a great idea for loyal Indian patronage and to woo visitors regardless of where they hail from.

Touches like these can adorn modern Indian restaurants that feature colorful yet sleek furniture made from modern materials with a minimalist design and ample spacing as well.

    OPEN RESTAURANT INTERIOR DESIGN

Open dining or open-air dining experiences are favored globally. It is the dining & chilling of choice folks who easily feel confined and cramped and who don’t care much about formal dining arrangements. Open dining interior concepts call for only a few major requirements from the owner’s side

Open restaurant interiors also entail restaurant styles that constitute a large, open kitchen wherein diners can see their food being prepared right in front of their eyes. The Japanese restaurant cooking style of “Teppanyaki” or “Hibachi” as it is more popularly known is a prime example of this cooking technique and as they’re quite an expensive dining affair with per plate costs running into the hundreds of dollars, diners expect premium quality, luxurious interiors with an airy atmoshpere to combat the smoke
