CHARACTERISTICS OF CAST IRON FURNITURE?
Unlike wrought iron furniture, cast iron furniture is not “wrought” “made” or “beaten” but is made using silicon casting molds and is easily fusible but is neither malleable nor ductile. Cast iron furniture is made using ornate carvings either using the pre-formed molds themselves or by hand during the smelting process. While it is a traditional furniture-making style, cast iron is still a widely used furniture style that remains unrivaled by even modern furniture manufacturing techniques.
However, one must pay heed to the manufacturers’ expertise and skill in making cast iron furniture that lasts for decades and requires little maintenance as this is one furniture style that is largely dependent on production techniques to prevent the iron from fracturing.
The very properties that make the furniture durable and heavy also prevent it from being a furniture piece that can be moved around easily. Due to their sold-iron properties, they make for great support structures and are used in table bases, table legs, slats, and support for marble tabletops.
Cast iron is still made in some parts of the United States, some pockets of South Asia, and widely made in India. It is used for making antique reproduction furniture and a number of different vintage styles. After a few years of use, the furniture automatically develops a “distressed & shabby chic” appeal which is often sought after and paid for separately by keen buyers.
Using sand casting techniques and pressing techniques for molten iron, cast iron furniture can be formed into several interesting patterns and shapes and if allowed to crystallize correctly, the furniture iron develops a natural protective layer that prevents corrosion.
DIFFERENTIATING CAST IRON FROM WROUGHT IRON
Cast iron furniture tends to be a lot heavier, is typically used in public areas like park benches, lamp posts, columns, etc since their relatively immobile, and is also popular in several industrial-themed restaurants and cafes.
Wrought iron furniture, on the other hand, tends to be a whole lot lighter, generally has a lot more ornate carvings, and is malleable instead of dense. While these are also found in several public spaces, you’re more likely to see these being used as outdoor patio furniture for residential use, hospitality use, beaches etc
